Vale

The sun had long since disappeared from the sky, but as usual, the heat of the day hadn’t dissipated. I leaned closer to the screen in the strategy chamber, the rest of the space quiet, a big empty cavern around me as I studied the blueprints for Bask’s newest ship. But shit, he’d been right. The Xenon technology Glib had adapted to strengthen and protect the ship simply made it much more complex and difficult to repair. And no one, not even Glib, could figure out why landing the ship made it flicker in and out of fade mode so fast it flashed like a beacon, announcing its presence.

I couldn’t help my grin. Still, what was complex meant Annie remained. I wanted to know everything about her, to lie in my bed with her in my arms and talk about nothing but her. Her childhood, her dreams, her hopes and fears, her future. I held my breath briefly as the idea of her future sliced through my thoughts. I wanted that future to be mine.

I wanted to listen to her memories and dreams and make more. So many more. I shouldn’t and I couldn’t but… I drew a shaky breath. I’d never wanted anything more. The impulse to find Annie and ask her to recognize me, to accept my imprint, to meld with only me, was like a living thing inside me. It scratched and wriggled to get out, and I trembled with anticipation, abuzz with need and nothing to satisfy it.

“Knock, knock.”

At the quiet voice in the doorway, I stuffed away the part of me half-feral over Annie, locking those thoughts and needs behind other thoughts of Gladria and responsibility, and greeted my friend. “Rizi. Can I do something for you?” I smiled on muscle memory alone.

“Have you got a moment?” She walked through the door, her steps uncharacteristically hesitant. Although Selva was the more assertive of the sisters, Rizi never lacked confidence in herself or her actions.

She stood in front of me, not quite touching distance, in a strange mixture between our friendship and our more formal working roles. “Vale, we’ve known each other for a long time,” she started.

I nodded and smiled. “Yes, we have.” Perhaps she needed some advice she couldn’t go to Selva for, or perhaps this was about the new human. I sat back and waited, my hands clasped in my lap.

“It’s just…” There was that uncharacteristic hesitation again. Her tongue flicked across her lips and she took a deep breath. “That is, I’ve been wondering—”

Something changed in her eyes and I sat up straight, one hand out as if I could prevent her from speaking further words. Surely not. Surely after all of these years, Rizi wasn’t about to—

My thoughts were stolen as she continued.

“I’ve held this in for too long and it’s time to say something.” She took another breath but one too quick for me to leap in and prevent her from saying anything else. “I hope we can be more than friends, Vale.
